By allowing the rod to rotate, the swivel base rod holder effectively eliminates the risk of sheared rod holder pins. More importantly, it enables the rod tip to follow the movement of the fish. This reduces the potential for line fraying and drag enhancement that can occur when the line exits the roller tip at an angle. Removing the rod from the holder is also simplified, as it is not rigidly locked in place. The swivel base holder functions as a standard rod holder when used with straight butt rods. In these cases, manual rotation of the rod allows the line to remain aligned with the roller tip. The rotational torque of the swivel is adjustable via a half-inch stainless steel lock nut at the bottom of the rod holder, which controls the pressure on two nylon drag washers.
